Analysis:
This project was made to experiment a bit with the horror genre. I also implemented some simple IA systems to have a generic enemy inside the level, as well as
The Tasks I gave myself were:
  • Short Non-Linear Level
  • 2 Layers Top-Down Level
  • Exploration and Environmental Storytelling
The Level Design rules I used to design this level:
  • Green Light mean Open, Red Light means close;
  • Diagonal objects love to reflect light to the camera;
The general feeling I wanted to have inside this level was to have a destroyed Lab to explore while attempting to collect all the keys needed to progress to the end of the level. To achieve that, I created three different areas inside the level, all interconnected and with geometry elements that make them distinguishable from each other.
I used "destroyed props" to create a feeling of "something happened here", as few automatic doors are damaged and some block is placed as if they were pushed by something big.
I've also placed geometry on many heights to give an effect of depth, like stairs, elevated corridors and similar.
In conclusion, I've used blueprints to create some interactable objects and flickering lights to give more intensity and pathos to the scene. One hardship I've found was that in the proximity of automated doors, I wanted to place green or red lights on both ends to ensure that their interaction would be clear on both sides, but the final result was to feel like being on a dancing floor, so I discarded this idea and placed lights only on one side and used geometry or other elements to make it clear that a certain door could be used or not.
